1.3.2 Software Installation

The installation of the software is very straightforward.

  1. Download and save the distribution tar file.
  2. Untar the file to a convenient installation directory of your choosing.
  3. The software is now ready to use! The installation directory contains the two modules, DIFF_PREP and DIFF_CALC, as well as a folder for Utilities. DIFF_CALC is run from the diffcalc_main directory which you will find in /installation directory/DIFF_CALC/diffcalc_main. Usage is described in detail in the Usage chapter.
  4. OPTIONAL: download and install the IDL virtual machine. More details are provided here, and also at the ITT website.
  5. OPTIONAL: inside the DIFF_CALC directory is a folder named "DIFF_CALC_WORK". Copy this directory to the user's home directory. This is used for storing settings files and for writing of temporary files. If this directory does not exist, it will be created the first time you run DIFF_CALC.
  6. OPTIONAL: inside DIFF_CALC_WORK, open configfile_simple.xml in a text editor and edit the settings according to your needs. The software will run with the default settings; however it may be advantageous to optimize you configuration file. The configuration file is described in more detail in the 3.1 Configuration File section.
